Choose IB levels with university prerequisites in view

Use a course shortlist to distinguish required subjects from helpful preparation and personal preference.

Explore course families before choosing levels

List several plausible areas of further study and a few representative courses. You do not need a fixed career at the start of the DP, but ignoring prerequisites can unnecessarily limit options. Use official course pages to identify the relevant subjects and levels. Distinguish the requirements of particular institutions from broad advice. An HL subject can offer valuable preparation, yet its value does not mean every university requires it. Your school adviser can help compare the options available in your timetable.

Make a prerequisite matrix

Create rows for courses and columns for required subjects, levels, mathematics pathways, grade expectations and language requirements. Add the source and entry year. Mark a subject as required, recommended or unrestricted only when the page supports that distinction. Do not translate 'helpful' into 'mandatory.' When a page names an equivalent qualification rather than an IB subject, seek clarification. This matrix makes genuine patterns visible while preserving exceptions. It is more useful than a universal list of the best subjects for admission.

Check mathematics and science details

Read pathway and level language carefully where a course needs quantitative or scientific preparation. Requirements can distinguish Mathematics AA from AI and HL from SL. Toronto's current international requirements, for example, make distinctions among mathematics pathways for different prerequisites; that is an institutional rule rather than a global one. Check the exact intended programme independently. Avoid choosing a level solely because its title sounds more advanced. Consider both eligibility and whether you can develop the understanding the future course will require.

Try a worked subject-choice decision

Imagine a student considering engineering and economics. Their matrix shows different requirements across several courses, including a mathematics condition and science requirements for some engineering options. The student compares these with school offerings, current strengths and willingness to study the subjects in depth. They discuss a combination that preserves the routes they genuinely value. This illustrative process does not declare one universal combination correct. A choice is defensible when it follows verified prerequisites and a realistic assessment of the student's interests and workload.

Balance preparation with sustainable study

After satisfying important requirements, compare subjects by interest, strengths, teaching support and the demands of the full programme. Choosing an additional difficult subject without a relevant purpose may increase workload without improving fit. Conversely, avoiding a required subject can close a route regardless of overall points. Discuss transitions and school policies before assuming a late change is available. Keep room for the core and the other subjects. A strong subject plan is coherent and manageable, not simply the combination with the most prestigious reputation.

Recheck before applications are finalized

Requirements can change between early planning and the entry cycle. Revisit the matrix before committing to applications and check it after a proposed subject or level change. If your interests move, research the new course family rather than assuming your earlier plan covers it. Keep written clarifications from admissions where relevant. Do not promise eligibility based solely on this guide. Its method helps you make informed choices, while the institution's current requirements and your actual subject record determine whether a particular application fits.
