Identify your examination cohort

The next revised Language B course is first assessed in May 2029. Students examined before that date should use the current task guidance for their cohort. Begin with the course outline supplied by your school and record your level and examination session. When using outside resources, check whether they describe your version of the course. A resource can offer useful practice while still giving an incorrect task format for your assessment.

Map themes to communication skills

Organize class material by theme, then attach listening, reading, writing and speaking tasks. Themes should supply contexts for communication, not become separate vocabulary silos. Record phrases that help describe, compare, explain and justify across several topics. This makes the map flexible. A skill such as supporting an opinion can be practised through travel, technology or environmental issues without memorizing a fixed essay for each.

Try a technology learning sequence

Imagine a unit about communication technology. Listen to an interview, summarize the speaker's view, compare it with a short article and write a response for a defined audience. Then discuss one unfamiliar follow-up question. Each step uses related ideas while testing a different skill. Identify where the difficulty lies: understanding detail, organizing an argument, choosing register or responding spontaneously. That diagnosis determines your next practice.

Keep level-specific commitments visible

Record the tasks and material required for your level, including studied literary works at HL under the applicable course. Confirm oral-stimulus and writing requirements with your teacher rather than borrowing a friend's preparation plan. Separate broad language-learning habits from assessed-task instructions. This allows your daily practice to remain useful while ensuring that formal rehearsal fits the course you will actually complete.

Review after each class unit

Choose an unfamiliar task to test a skill you practised in the unit. Compare your response with feedback and update the map with one specific gap. Keep current official and school guidance in a checked reference page, noting the cohort. As new resources appear for 2029, label them clearly before using them. The map should help you communicate across themes and keep assessment preparation accurate.

Repeat the task with one changed condition

Change the audience, purpose or context and adapt your response. Notice which vocabulary, organization and register need to change, and which ideas remain useful. This tests communication rather than recall of a fixed answer. Compare the new attempt with trusted course materials and teacher feedback. Select one recurring error to repair, then use the corrected form in several fresh sentences. Keep successful phrases as flexible patterns, not scripts you must reproduce word for word. Revisit the task after a gap and check whether you can communicate the idea clearly without rebuilding the original response from memory. Keep a brief record of the task, your decision and the result. This makes the next practice session specific: repair the choice that caused difficulty, then attempt a new version to see whether your communication or interpretation has improved.
