Let the question determine the comparison

Language A Paper 2 asks for a comparative response based on studied literary works. Begin by identifying the question's central concept and required judgment. Choose works that provide meaningful evidence for that focus, following your current course guidance. A prepared essay about a shared theme may not answer the question. The comparison needs to examine how the works develop meanings through relevant authorial choices, with knowledge of each work supporting the argument.

Create comparable analytical claims

Choose a few functions or relationships you can investigate in both works. These might involve the presentation of authority, the development of conflict or the role of setting, depending on the question. Record evidence and interpretation for each. Avoid creating unrelated categories for the two works. The comparison should reveal significant similarities and differences, rather than place two separate book reports beside each other.

Try a confinement comparison

Imagine one work represents confinement through physical rooms, while another develops it through repeated social expectations. A useful paragraph could compare how these choices restrict characters' possibilities. Then examine a difference: one character finds a spatial exit, while another changes a relationship without leaving the setting. This could refine your argument about what freedom means in the works. The example is hypothetical and needs replacement with accurate evidence from your studied material.

Integrate form and context carefully

Explain how form contributes to meaning: narration, dialogue, sequence or another relevant choice. Use contextual knowledge when it clarifies interpretation, without reducing a work to a reflection of its era. Specific evidence may be a precise reference rather than a memorized quotation, depending on the task. Keep details accurate and make their analytical function explicit. A comparison can be nuanced without treating every similarity as more important than every difference.

Test the plan on a changed question

Write a plan with a thesis and connected comparative claims, then change the question's focus. Identify which evidence remains useful and which must change. If the whole plan survives untouched, check whether it was too generic. Practise the weakest comparative paragraph before writing a complete timed response. Use teacher feedback to improve the link between comparison and judgment, so the conclusion explains what the relationships establish about the question.

Test the interpretation against the text

Choose your most important analytical claim and return to the exact detail that supports it. Explain the connection without using a vague phrase such as creates an effect. Then look for a detail that complicates the interpretation. Decide whether it changes the claim, narrows it or strengthens a more nuanced reading. Keep references accurate in your notes and distinguish the text's words from your paraphrase. A short evidence audit is more valuable than adding another technique name with no explanation. After feedback, practise the repaired reasoning on a different passage so you can test whether the improvement transfers beyond the example you already know. Keep a brief record of the task, your decision and the result. This makes the next practice session specific: repair the choice that caused difficulty, then attempt a new version to see whether your communication or interpretation has improved.
