Begin with the actual task brief

Internal assessments are marked by teachers and externally moderated by the IB. Their forms differ across subjects: an investigation, oral, portfolio or another task may require quite different preparation. Obtain the current brief from each teacher and record your subject, level and assessment session. Do not assume that an essay template, universal word limit or generic rubric applies to every IA. The first useful planning decision is understanding what evidence of learning your particular task asks you to produce.

Create one row per assessment

For each task, record the required output, school milestones, applicable limits, permitted support and resources you need. Add the source of each rule so you can resolve uncertainty later. Keep school dates distinct from your personal target dates. If a detail is unconfirmed, mark it and ask the teacher rather than filling the gap using a peer's memory. This compact map helps you see both the different demands of subjects and the weeks when several assessments compete for attention.

Check syllabus changes before using examples

An older exemplar may belong to a different assessment model. Compare its session and task with your current brief before treating its structure as useful guidance. The IB publishes curriculum updates, but your teacher's applicable guide should govern details. Ask which parts of an older example remain relevant and which do not. A scientific investigation example, for instance, may illustrate good reasoning while using a retired assessment structure. Study the reasoning critically instead of copying headings that no longer suit your task.

Try a worked comparison

Imagine a student with a mathematics exploration, a language oral and a science investigation due in the same term. The exploration needs a mathematical line of reasoning; the oral needs appropriate preparation within its format; the investigation needs a feasible method and analysis. A single action called 'write all IAs' conceals these differences. The student instead schedules a mathematical test, approved oral preparation and a science pilot as distinct outputs. This illustrative map makes early progress measurable and exposes access dependencies before final drafting.

Understand assessment without chasing a formula

Read the applicable criteria or assessment instrument to understand what successful work demonstrates. Translate broad demands into questions about your own task: Is the reasoning clear? Does evidence support the conclusion? Can the reader understand the method? These are inspection questions, not a new universal IB rubric. A teacher's estimated or internally awarded mark is not a guarantee of the final result because moderation checks standards. Focus on the quality and authenticity of the work you can explain.

Use the map to decide the next action

Review the assessment map alongside your weekly capacity. Prioritize tasks with external dependencies or uncertain feasibility, even if they are not due first. Keep required approvals, evidence collection, permitted feedback and final checks in the plan. When a deadline collision becomes serious, raise it with concrete information about progress and blocked steps. Update the map after teacher guidance. The result should be a reliable overview that supports subject-specific work, while the detailed requirements remain traceable to each current task brief.
