Plan a Dutch university application by programme

Check diploma and subject fit, distinguish selection routes and follow each portal's requirements.

Choose the programme before the procedure

Start with the official programme page, not a single country-wide application checklist. Record the institution, degree, language of instruction and entry year. Examine curriculum and qualification requirements before deciding that the course is suitable. Dutch programmes can have different selection and document arrangements. Recognition of the IB diploma does not automatically answer subject prerequisites or selection questions. Keep the source for each requirement. If you are unsure which applicant category applies, ask the institution with details of your qualification and intended programme.

Check diploma, subjects and language separately

Record how the programme assesses your secondary qualification, any required IB subjects and levels, and language evidence or exemptions. An English-taught course does not mean every applicant is exempt from proving language proficiency. If the programme gives a diploma-equivalence list, use the entry relevant to your exact qualification. Mark unclear details for confirmation. Avoid assuming that admission rules at one university apply to all others. The purpose of the requirements record is to identify a complete, verified fit rather than one promising headline.

Distinguish enrolment requests from completed applications

Follow the university's sequence for Studielink and any institutional portal. For example, Utrecht's published procedure separates an enrolment application in Studielink from document upload in OSIRIS. That is an institutional example, not a universal portal name. Check whether your chosen programme has additional selection steps or a limited number of places. Record the completion status in each system. Creating an account or making an enrolment request may not complete the evidence and selection work the university needs.

Try a worked application tracker

Imagine a student comparing two Dutch programmes. Their tracker has rows for diploma eligibility, mathematics requirements, language evidence, selection procedure, enrolment request and document submission. One programme asks for an additional task; the other does not. The student uses separate deadlines and completion conditions rather than copying the first checklist into the second. This illustrative tracker makes the differences visible. It also prevents the student from assuming that a portal confirmation means every application component has been accepted or reviewed.

Prepare only the requested documents

Obtain the current document list and instructions about scans, certification, translations and predicted or final qualifications. Utrecht's guidance illustrates that programme-specific documents such as a motivation letter should be submitted when requested. Check your own programme rather than uploading extra material on the assumption that more is always helpful. Coordinate school-issued documents early. Keep filenames and versions consistent and inspect each upload. If a portal request appears to conflict with a public page, seek clarification before substituting a document.

Plan the steps after an offer

Read the actual conditions and enrolment instructions. Check final-results delivery, outstanding documents and any separate housing or practical arrangements using official current information. Keep admissions and accommodation tasks distinct. If your circumstances or programme choice changes, confirm the consequences through the university before withdrawing or accepting elsewhere. Recheck deadlines for the relevant entry year. A complete Dutch application plan follows the particular programme from eligibility through enrolment, with accurate portal status and a record of what still depends on school or institutional action.
