Turn DP2 deadlines into a workable plan

Work backwards from your school's dates, spot dependencies and protect time for revisions and exams.

Collect confirmed dates and deliverables

DP2 becomes easier to plan when every deadline describes a deliverable. List the dates your school has given you for proposals, data collection, drafts, consultations, final coursework and mock examinations. Add the required file or piece of work beside each date. Label any unconfirmed date as provisional and resolve it with the relevant teacher.

The DP uses both internal and external assessment, but public IB dates do not replace school submission dates. Your teachers need time for authentication, marking and administration. Build your plan around the dates they give you.

Work backwards from each submission

For every substantial task, sketch the steps that must happen before submission. A scientific investigation may require approval, a pilot, data collection, analysis, writing and revision. An essay may require usable sources, a provisional argument and a draft. Identify steps that depend on another person or a resource, such as laboratory access or a supervisor meeting.

Give those dependencies an earlier target date. Leave a buffer for the problems you cannot predict exactly. Choose its size from your workload and the uncertainty of the task, rather than assuming every project needs the same number of days.

Check capacity before filling the calendar

Look at an ordinary week after lessons, travel, activities and rest. Estimate the study blocks you can realistically use. Then compare that capacity with the work due. If your plan needs ten blocks and you have six, writing smaller text in the calendar will not solve the conflict.

Reduce unnecessary tasks, divide work into smaller outputs and raise a genuine deadline collision early. Explain the state of each task and the blocked step. This gives your teacher information that can help them advise you.

Use an illustrative four-week sequence

Suppose a school has set an essay draft for Friday of week four. In week one, check the question and source access. In week two, produce a paragraph-level argument plan and test one central claim against the evidence. In week three, complete the draft. In week four, check coherence, references and the specific points your teacher has asked you to address.

This example depends on already having a feasible topic. If sources are missing, move source access to the top of the plan. A schedule should reveal that risk before you spend several evenings on prose.

Make the weekly decision small

Choose the next three important outputs, then put them in available blocks. Consider urgency, the amount of work remaining and dependencies together. A project due later may deserve attention now if an interview appointment or laboratory booking is difficult to arrange. Keep short exam practice sessions in the week so coursework does not consume every available block.

  • Write an action, estimated duration and completion condition for each block.
  • Review blocked tasks at the start of the week.
  • Move unfinished work deliberately instead of silently extending every evening.

Finish with a submission check

Before the final deadline, check the actual submission file. Open it, inspect figures and citations, confirm the requested format and filename, and verify the word count using your subject's rules. Keep a copy of the submitted version and any submission confirmation. These checks belong in the schedule because they take time and can expose problems that a writing-only plan misses.
