Resource overview
This question paper is listed under Physics in the 2001 examination archive. Its catalogue level is HL. The catalogue session is May. The information below helps you identify the document before opening the complete PDF. Subject, year and session labels come from the archive catalogue; the original cover remains the reference if a label differs. A file is not automatically suitable for your current syllabus simply because its subject name matches.
For revision, choose a manageable section and attempt it before consulting the matching markscheme. Keep a short error log separating knowledge gaps, method choices and unclear explanation. Compare the paper number, level and examination zone before pairing files. Older papers can be useful practice, but their topic coverage and format may differ from the course you are taking now.
The public preview contains file information and, where reliable text extraction is available, a limited opening excerpt. It is not a summary of unseen questions or a replacement for the original document. Create a free email account to read or download the complete file. No payment is required to unlock this archive resource.
This original usage overview is based on the archive metadata. It does not claim to summarise the complete file.

SECTION A
Candidates must answer all questions in the spaces provided.
A1. Gas law experiment (data based question)
Boyles law states that for an ideal gas at constant temperature, pressure is inversely proportional to
volume. To test whether or not a real gas obeys Boyles law, three students set up the apparatus shown
below.

The gas sample is enclosed in the tube and the length of the gas column can be measured against
the scale. The gas pressure in the apparatus can be adjusted by pumping air in or out through the
stopcock. The Bourdon gauge indicates gauge pressure, i.e. the difference in pressure inside and
outside the gauge.
[2]
(a) After each gas adjustment the students wait a few minutes before reading the column length
and the Bourdon gauge. Explain why they should not take the readings immediately and
what occurs during waiting.

(b) Boyles law involves the volume V of the gas, yet the students instead measure the length L of
the gas column. Why is this acceptable?
