Resource overview

This question paper is listed under Biology in the 2014 examination archive. Its catalogue level is SL. The catalogue session is May. The information below helps you identify the document before opening the complete PDF. Subject, year and session labels come from the archive catalogue; the original cover remains the reference if a label differs. A file is not automatically suitable for your current syllabus simply because its subject name matches.

For revision, choose a manageable section and attempt it before consulting the matching markscheme. Keep a short error log separating knowledge gaps, method choices and unclear explanation. Compare the paper number, level and examination zone before pairing files. Older papers can be useful practice, but their topic coverage and format may differ from the course you are taking now.

The public preview contains file information and, where reliable text extraction is available, a limited opening excerpt. It is not a summary of unseen questions or a replacement for the original document. Create a free email account to read or download the complete file. No payment is required to unlock this archive resource.

This original usage overview is based on the archive metadata. It does not claim to summarise the complete file.

Write your answers in the boxes provided. 1. Ozone gas in the atmosphere helps to block high-energy ultraviolet light (UV) from reaching the Earth’s surface. Over the past few decades, the ozone layer has been decreasing, thus allowing through more UV. The effect of this decrease in the ozone has been studied in different plants. An early study was undertaken on patience dock plants (Rumex patientia ) to test the effect of atmospheric ozone levels decreasing by 38 %. The net photosynthesis (total photosynthesis minus total respiration) and respiration of the plants were measured during seven days of exposure to UV . The rates of photosynthesis and respiration are given in rates of carbon dioxide uptake per unit area of leaf. Net photosynthesis / mg CO 2 dm–2 hr–1 13 12 11 10 9 8 0 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Days of treatment Respiration / mg CO2 dm–2 hr–1 0 –1 –2 –3 increasing respiration 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Days of treatment Key: control plants exposed to UV with 38 % less ozone [Source: Adapted from W.
