Resource overview

This markscheme is listed under Geography in the 2000 examination archive. Its catalogue level is SL and HL. The catalogue session is May. The information below helps you identify the document before opening the complete PDF. Subject, year and session labels come from the archive catalogue; the original cover remains the reference if a label differs. A file is not automatically suitable for your current syllabus simply because its subject name matches.

Use this markscheme alongside its matching question paper. Attempt the questions first, then compare the required reasoning and the available marks. Record the exact step that lost credit rather than only the final answer. Examiner wording can help you distinguish a calculation error from missing explanation, but an older markscheme may use a previous assessment structure.

The public preview contains file information and, where reliable text extraction is available, a limited opening excerpt. It is not a summary of unseen questions or a replacement for the original document. Create a free email account to read or download the complete file. No payment is required to unlock this archive resource.

This original usage overview is based on the archive metadata. It does not claim to summarise the complete file.

(a) Describe the changes shown in the diagram. It is expected that candidates will identify and describe the main changes evident in the diagram, which could be summarised as an ageing of the population [1 mark]. Candidates should especially highlight the reduced proportion of 0–14 year olds between 1750 and 2000 (31 % to 19 %), with most of the reduction occurring since 1900 [1 mark] . The other key trend is the change in the proportion of people aged 65 and over, which has increased from 6% in 1750 to 19% in 2000, with almost half of that increase occurring since 1950 [1 mark]. If other equally important facts are presented, marks may be awarded accordingly. The remaining [2 marks] should be awarded on the basis of candidates presenting accurate trends illustrated by relevant data. To aid examiners, the precise values of the data in the diagram are as follows: 1910846665+ 30312221232240–64 32353942404115–39 1924313331310–14 200019501900185018001750 (b) Account for the changes shown in the diagram with reference to the demographic transition model.
